There’s a Lot of World to See: A Guide for Solo Travelers

As I write this, I am cruising through the Mediterranean on a Virgin ship, a voyage I purchased three years ago during the early months of the pandemic, when prices were low. I am frugal with my day-to-day purchases so I can have a few big purchases, and days like these.

Whenever I consider travel, there is always a time when I feel a little blue about being single. When seeing such great sites, you want those moments when you turn to a partner, a friend, or a family member and say, “Wow! Can you believe we’re here and seeing this?”

I remember this specifically the last time I traveled big, when I went to Vienna and Prague for a week in the spring of 2019. I had recently acquired a new friend who had an artistic soul and I thought of him every time I saw something beautiful, which was several times a day. He did appreciate my sending him photos.

In the end, though, I’m thrilled I went and have no regrets about going solo. I think that a lot of people do not want to make such trips on their own, especially international travel. They fear feeling stupid because they don’t know the language of the host country well enough, if at all. Or they genuinely believe the sadness of going alone will outweigh the pleasures of going at all.
